MASPETH TYPE FAMILY

OBJECTIVE:to create a typeface family inspired by the neighborhood Maspeth in New York City. A neighborhood full of industrial warehouses that at night turns into a center for avant-garde electronic performances.

OUTCOME:E A display family of 7 typefaces of varying weights and widths and a process book documenting research and final type specimens. The decision to expand the family to include varying weights stemmed from the conceptual root of varying crowd densities in club spaces.  The design reflects the digital influence of the nightlife, but also was constructed to hint at calligraphic forms to echo the history of hand-painted signs in the neighborhood.

The process book was inspired by DIY flyers and industrial aesthetics, influencing the choice of binding and colored paper.

The project was a final project of The Letterform Archive’s Typewest progam of 2025 taught by type design Sahar Afshar.
